Dept. of Oral Pathology and Microbiology

Deptartment Profile

The specialty oral and maxillofacial pathology is concerned with diagnosis and study of the causes and effects of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region and related structures such as salivary glands, temporomandibular joints, facial muscles and perioral skin (the skin around the mouth).

Our Vision

To produce oral & maxillofacial pathologists & general dentists who have a systematic & correct approach towards the diagnosis of the lesion and interpretations of the investigations.
To establish detection centre & research centre for oral cancer & precancerous lesions. To provide high quality biopsy service to general private practioner.

Facilities in Haematology division

  1. Caters to patient in college and also to referrals from private practitioners.

  2. Special histochemical and immune histochemical staining is performed.

  3. Hard tissue analysis is also undertaken.

  4. Cytosmear analysis

  5. Cytomorphometry is performed utilizing Bio wizard De-Winter software.

Facilities in Histopathology division

  1. Caters to patient in college and also to referrals from private practitioners.

  2. One of the few centres equipped with a biochemical analyser.

  3. Accreditation from Christian Medical College, Vellore.

  4. Advanced biochemical tests are also conducted which include serum lipid profile,urea, uric acid, creatinine, alkaline phosphatise, SGOT, SGPT,total protein, albumin and bilirubin. Serological tests for HIV and HBsAg is also conducted.

  5. The biochemical analyser is also used to conduct few very specific research oriented tests for salivary diagnosis and determination. This includes pH determination, salivary nitrate levels and buffering capacity.

Facilities in Microbiology division

  1. Aerobic and anaerobic culture is performed with colony count estimation

  2. Antibiotic sensitivity is undertaken.

  3. Isolation and identification of microbial species

  4. Many research projects are currently underway in Oral Microbiology

  5. In addition to the above facilities, the department houses an educational museum which houses an exhaustive collection of tooth and soft tissue anomalies along with charts and models for patient education.
